Etymology
a- + semelhar, or possibly from a Vulgar Latin *assimiliāre, from Late Latin assimilāre, present active infinitive of assimilō, from Latin ad + similō < similis. [1] Compare Spanish asemejar, Italian assomigliare. Doublet of assimilar.
