Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Mexican Spanish ates, plural of ate (quince jelly) of Nahuatl origin, according to Cuadrado Muñiz (1972). In addition, Blust (2023) stated that the fruit was a native of tropical America, and introduced into Southeast Asia sometime during the 16th century.

Compare Ilocano atis, Kapampangan anatis, Bikol Central atis, and Cebuano atis. See also Nepali आँट (ā̃ṭ).
