Etymology[edit]

From western dialects of Finnish, known from written sources since 1500's. Earlier origin unknown, although possibly from Baltic languages (see: Lithuanian 'aušrà' (dawn)). Other Uralic languages mostly use words related to Finnish päivä (day) and kajo (shimmer, gleam) to denote "sun". See: Estonian: päike and Enets: kaija.
