Etymology[edit]

Originally an innovation of the western dialects of Finnish (replacing päivä). Attested in written sources since the 1500s. Formed with the suffix +‎ -nko from a root of unknown origin, for which proposed etymologies include:

  1. A variant of auer. [1]
  2. from Baltic languages (compare Lithuanian aušrà ‎(dawn)).
