From Old Spanish ayuno, from a Vulgar Latin *aiūnus < *iaiūnus, jajūnus, from Latin iēiūnus, from Proto-Italic *jagjūnos, itself from Proto-Indo-European *Hyeh₂ǵ-yu-, adjectival form of *Hyeh₂ǵ-ye/o- (to sacrifice).
