     Bái vật giáo còn rất xa mới nâng được con người lên trên những dục vọng thể xác; trái lại, nó là ‘tôn giáo của những dục vọng thể xác’. Óc tưởng tượng, được dục vọng nung nấu, tạo ra ở con người theo bái vật giáo cái ảo tưởng dường như ‘vật vô tri vô giác’ có thể thay đổi những đức tính tự nhiên của mình chỉ nhằm thỏa mãn sở thích hay thay đổi của anh ta. Vì vậy dục vọng thô bạo của người theo bái vật giáo đập vỡ bái vật của mình một khi vật này không còn là tên đầy tớ hết sức trung thành của [nó] nữa.

     Fetishism is so far from raising man above his sensuous desires that, on the contrary, it is ‘the religion of sensuous desire’. Fantasy arising from desire deceives the fetish-worshipper into believing that an “inanimate object” will give up its natural character in order to comply with his desires. Hence the crude desire of the fetish-worshipper smashes the fetish when it [the fetish] ceases to be its [the crude desire's] most obedient servant.
