Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Vietic *pəɲʔ, from Proto-Austroasiatic *paɲʔ (“to shoot”). Cognate with Muong pảnh, Khmer បាញ់ (bañ) and Pacoh pánh. Compare Proto-Austronesian *panaq (“to shoot”) (whence Malay panah) and maybe Vietnamese ná (“crossbow”).
