[edit]Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑀭𑀺𑀲 (varisa), from Sanskrit वर्ष (varṣá, “year”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wers-ó-m, from the root *h₁wers- (“to rain”). Cognate with Gujarati વરસ (varas) and Hindustani بَرس / बरस (baras).
