Borrowed from Middle High German büxe, bükse, or from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Frisian büxe, bükse; cf. (deprecated template usage) [etyl] German dialectal buxe, Swedish byxa, byxor, first mentioned in 17th-century dictionaries. The original meaning was “goat leather pants” (cf. Middle High German buck “male goat,” “buck”), later extended to all kinds of pants.[1]
