Etymology[edit]
From blāc (“pale, shining, white”) + -ian, alternatively spelt blǣċ, from Proto-Germanic *blaikaz. Compare Old Norse bleikr (“pale”), Faroese bleikur (“pale”), Icelandic bleikur (“pale”), Danish bleg (“pale”), Norwegian Bokmål blek (“pale”) (also bleik), Norwegian Nynorsk bleik (“pale”), Swedish blek (“pale”), Dutch bleek (“pale”), German bleich (“pale”), German Low German bleek (“pale”).
