Inherited from Prakrit *𑀯𑀭𑀺𑀱𑀦𑁆𑀢 (*variṣanta),[1] *𑀯𑀭𑀺𑀲𑀦𑁆𑀢 (*varisanta),[2] from Sanskrit वर्षति (varṣati, to rain).[1][2] Cognate with Gujarati વરસવું (varasvũ), Hindustani بَرَسْنا (barasnā) / बरसना (barasnā), and Sindhi وَسَڻُ (vasaṇu).
