[edit]From Latin *carnem ligat (literally “ties the meat”), indicating that meat is forbidden. Compare Romanian cârneleagă. Compare similar formations in carnival, Italian carnevale from *carnem levāre, Old Italian carasciale from *carnem laxāre, and Spanish carnestolendas (“three days preceding the beginning of Lent”) from *carnis tollendus.
