Etymology[edit]

From Latin *carnem ligat (literally ties the meat), indicating that meat is forbidden. Compare Romanian cârneleagă. Compare similar formations in carnival, Italian carnevale from *carnem levāre, Old Italian carasciale from *carnem laxāre, and Spanish carnestolendas (three days preceding the beginning of Lent) from *carnis tollendus.
