Etymology

From Proto-Mon-Khmer *sguut ~ *sgat ~ *(s)gət (to be cut short, to cut); cognate with Arem [kùːt] ("to chop, to cut short"), Old Mon sgūt (to be interrupted, cut short), Khmer ស្កាត់ (skat, to interrupt, to take a short cut) and Khasi kut (to come to an end).
