[edit]From Proto-Celtic *kanxstikā, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱonḱ-, *ḱonk- (“horse”); compare Dutch hengst (“stallion”), Lithuanian šankùs (“nimble”), Persian خنگ (xeng, “gray horse”).[1] Matasović also compares this word to Proto-Celtic *kengeti (“to step”).[2]
