From a modification of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Spanish berrojo (influenced by the verb cerrar (to close)), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Vulgar Latin *verruculum, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin vericulum, diminutive of verū (dart).
