Borrowed from Old French chapel, from Vulgar Latin *cappellus, from Late Latin cappa. Doublet of capelo.
Compare Galician chapeu, Spanish chapeo, chapeau, Catalan capell, Occitan capèl, French chapeau, and Italian cappello (the Galician and Spanish also being borrowings from French).
