[edit]From char + -ière, or from Late Latin (via) carrāria, from Latin carrus. Doublet of carrière (“career”), taken from Old Occitan. Compare Occitan carrièra, Catalan and Spanish carrera, Portuguese carreira, archaic Italian carraia, Romanian cărare.
