Etymology

char +‎ -ière, or from Late Latin (via) carrāria, from Latin carrus. Doublet of carrière (career), taken from Old Occitan. Compare Occitan carrièra, Catalan and Spanish carrera, Portuguese carreira, archaic Italian carraia, Romanian cărare.
