    • 1940, International Association of Milk Sanitarians, Journal of Milk Technology, Volumes 3-4, p. 74:
Historically, it would appear that the Certain-Thyson Milk Company of Miami, Florida, began the manufacture and distribution of chocolate milk in bottles during the late fall of 1919.

Usage notes

Chocolate milk is distinct from milk chocolate, which is a solid form of chocolate made with milk. Chocolate syrup or powder mixed with a liquid and served hot is typically referred to as hot chocolate; this drink is usually made with water, although it may also be made with milk.
