Etymology
[edit]From Vulgar Latin *flag(u)rare, from Late Latin flāgrāre, present active infinitive of flāgrō, by dissimilation from Latin frāgrō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰreh₂gro-, from *bʰreh₂g- (“to smell”) + *-ro-. By surface analysis, ciàguru (“scent”) + -ari. Compare Occitan flairar, Catalan flairar, French flairer, Portuguese cheirar.
