From North Sea Germanic *kirikǣ, from Proto-West Germanic *kirikā, from Byzantine Greek κυριακόν (δόμα) (kuriakón (dóma), the Lord's (house)), from Ancient Greek κύριος (kúrios, lord). Cognate with Old Frisian tzirke, Old Dutch and Old Saxon kirika, Old High German chirihha.
