From Ottoman Turkish جوان, from Persian جوان. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂yéwHō, thus a doublet of jön. Cognate with Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬥 (yauuan), Latin iuvenis, Lithuanian jaunas, English young, Sanskrit युवन् (yúvan), Irish óg.
