From Late Latin commātrem, accusative of commāter, from com- (“together”) + Latin māter (“mother”), whence also madre. Cognate to Neapolitan cummà, Sicilian cummari, (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Spanish and Portuguese comadre, French commère, Norman conméthe, Romanian cumătră.
