Romanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Possibly from a Common Slavic kŭmotrŭ or kŭmotra < Latin compater. However, the corresponding forms in other Slavic languages are different, such as Bulgarian, Croatian, Russian, kum, Serbian kumak, which leads some linguists to propose that the Romanian word may have been derived analogically as a masculine from the related feminine form cumătră, and this possibly directly from Latin commater, commatrem.[1] Compare Spanish comadre, Italian comare.
