[edit]diët (plural diëts)
Usage notes
[edit]- The diaeresis ⟨◌̈⟩ is sometimes used in native words to separate two adjacent vowels with different pronunciations (e.g. coöperate and reënter). It has been mostly replaced by the use of a hyphen (co-operate and re-enter) or by no indication at all (cooperate and reenter). The accent mark is still used in a few publications, notably The New Yorker.
