Etymology

From a Vulgar Latin derivative of Late Latin jejūnāre, alternative form of ieiūnāre, present active infinitive of ieiūnō, from Latin ieiūnus, with the initial Latin je- probably changing to de- and later di- in Italian. Compare Catalan dejunar. Compare also Old Italian giunare.
