From a Vulgar Latin root *disculceus, from disculceātus, disculciātus, or from a variant of discaltsu. Compare Daco-Romanian desculț, Friulian discolç, Sardinian iscultzu; compare also Spanish descalzo, Portuguese descalço, Catalan descalç, Italian scalzo, Sicilian scàusu, Corsican scalzu, from related roots *discalceus or *excalceus.
