Etymology[edit]

From a Vulgar Latin root *disculceus, itself either from a shortening of Late Latin disculceātus, disculciātus, or from *discalceus (from Latin dis- + calceus), and influenced by the -u- in disculciō; alternatively from a variant of Aromanian discaltsu. Compare Daco-Romanian desculț, Friulian discolç, Sardinian iscultzu; compare also Spanish descalzo, Portuguese descalço, Catalan descalç, Italian scalzo, Sicilian scàusu, Corsican scalzu, from related roots *discalceus or *excalceus.
