  1. iron objects (e.g. bars, etc.)
    cietumnieks izlauza loga dzelžus — the prisoner broke the window irons (= bars)
    zēns vāca no pelnu čupām mazāk apdegušās naglas un citus dzelžus — the boy collected less burned nails and other iron objects from the piles of ashes
  2. fetters, shackles
    roku dzelži — handcuffs (lit. hand irons, shackles)
    uzlikt arestētajam roku dzelžus — to put handcuffs on the prisoner
    slēgt dzelžos — to put on arm, leg shackles
  3. (on a horse) bit, bridle
    izņemt zirgam dzelžus no mutes — to remove the bit from the horse's mouth
