Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Tupi-Guarani *embireko.[1][2][3] By surface analysis, emi- (“prefix that forms passive verbal derivatives”) +‎ erekó (“to make be with oneself, to have”), literally “what someone makes be with oneself”.[1][4] Cognate with Paraguayan Guaraní embireko.
