Etymology

From Vulgar Latin or Late Latin ingannāre, present active infinitive of ingannō (attested in a gloss), from Latin ganniō, gannīre. Compare Portuguese enganar, Catalan enganyar, Italian ingannare. Cf. also Medieval Latin Medieval Latin (in)gannatura (mockery).
