Alteration of earlier inship, equivalent to in- +‎ ship. Compare West Frisian ynskipje (to board a ship), Dutch inschepen (to ship, embark), German einschiffen (to ship, embark), Danish indskibe (to ship, embark), Swedish inskeppa (to ship, embark).
