Via some other European language, ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek ἐπιστήμη (epistḗmē, science, knowledge), from ἐπίσταμαι (epístamai, I know) and λόγος (lógos, speech, oration, study) +‎ -ija.
