Etymology

(deprecated template usage) [etyl] Frankish *sciuhan (to dread, shun, avoid), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *skiuhwaną, *skiwaną (to frighten). Cognate with Old High German sciuhen (to frighten, make fearful), Dutch schuwen (to caution). More at shy.
