      Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese espinha, from Latin spīna (thorn), from Proto-Italic *speinā, from Proto-Indo-European *spey- (sharp point). Cognate with Galician espiña. The sense of "spine" or "thorn" was lost to espinho.
