From Latin euphorbium, from Ancient Greek εὐφόρβιον (euphórbion), from Εὔφορβος (Eúphorbos, Euphorbus, physician to the Mauretanian king Juba II) + -ιον (-ion, related to).

The name is from εὔφορβος (eúphorbos, well-fed), from εὖ (, well) + φορβή (phorbḗ, food, fodder).
