From a nominalization of the Latin fāgeus, adjective form of Latin fāgus (“beech”), from Proto-Italic *fāgos, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂ǵos (“beech tree”). Compare Occitan fau or fag, Italian faggio, Spanish haya.
