From Old Norse fnœsa (to sneeze, snort), from Proto-Germanic *fnōsijaną (to snort, puff), from Proto-Indo-European *pnew- (to breathe, pant). Related to Old Norse fnasa, Old English fnēosan (to sneeze). More at English sneeze.
