Etymology

From Middle High German frezzen, from Old High German frezzan, firezzan, from Proto-Germanic *fraetaną. Cognate with Dutch vreten, English fret, Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌰𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (fraitan), Swedish fräta.
