Cognate with Low German eten, Dutch eten, English eat, Danish æde, Norwegian ete, Swedish äta, and Gothic 𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (itan). Non-Germanic cognates include Latin edō, Russian есть (jestʹ), Scottish Gaelic ith.
