2. a time (occasion of a particular thing happening or being the case)

   Han gjorde det inte en gång, utan tre gånger

   He did it not once [one time], but three times

   En gång är ingen gång, två gånger en vana

   One time is no time, two times a habit

   Är det första gången du är här?

   Is this your first time here?

   (literally, “Is it the first time you are here?”)

   Nej, jag har varit här två gånger tidigare

   No, I have been here two times before

   Vi besökte museet två gånger. Ena gången gick vi, andra gången tog vi bussen.

   We visited the museum twice [two times]. [The] one time we walked, the other time we took the bus.

   Could also be put as "första gången" (the first time), like in English. "Ena gången" (the one time) and "andra gången" (the other/second time) implies two times.

   Jag försökte en gång till, och den här gången gick det

   I tried once more [one more time], and this time [definite is used with "den här/där" (this/that)] it worked ["and this time it went" – compare "that won't go" in English]

   Det var en gång ett troll som bodde i en grotta

   Once upon a time, there was a troll who lived in a cave

   (literally, “There was once [one time] a troll who lived in a cave”)

   The traditional opening to fairy tales. Not used otherwise, unless imitating fairy tales.

   En gång i tiden var byn en idyllisk plats, men det var innan fabriken byggdes

   Once upon a time [one time in [the] time], the village was an idyllic place, but that was before the factory was built

   "Once upon a time" more generally and not just as an opening to fairy tales.
