From Malay gandum, from Persian گندم (gandom), from Middle Persian 𐫃𐫗𐫇𐫖 (gnwm /gannum/, “wheat”), (in book Pahlavi 𐭤𐭢 (Hg /gan(d)um/)), from Proto-Iranian, from possibly Semitic (compare Proto-Semitic *ḥnṭ).
