[edit]Inherited from Old Norse gandr (“magic staff, sorcery; wolf”), from Proto-Norse *ᚷᚨᚾᛞᚨᛉ (*gandaʀ) (attested in ᚢᚾᚷᚨᚾᛞᛁᛉ (ungandiʀ, “unsorcered; not bewitched”)), from Proto-Germanic *gandaz, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰen- (“to beat; slay”).[1]
