From Middle High German gehürnet, from Old High German *gihurnit, from Proto-Germanic *hurnidaz, past participle of Proto-Germanic *hurnijaną (“to horn”), equivalent to ge + Horn + -t. Cognate with Old Frisian herned (“horned”), Old English ġehyrned (“horned”) (English horned), Old Norse hyrndr (“horned”).
