From Middle French gerber, from gerbe (sheaf), from Old French jarbe, garbe (sheaf, ear of grain, wreath), from Frankish *garba (sheaf), from Proto-Germanic *garbō (sheaf), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrebʰ- (to snatch, take, rake). Cognate with Old High German garba (sheaf), Middle Low German garve (sheaf). More at garb.
