good evening

  1. (generally formal in US, Canada) Used as a greeting in the evening.
    Synonym: (obsolete) good-den
    Good evening everyone and welcome to our 34th annual general meeting.

Usage notes[edit]

(US, Canada) Good evening is generally considered quite formal, such as by a television news anchor or at the beginning of an address to an audience. An exception is if it is said with exaggeration and with a smile, as in "Good evening ladies! You are all looking lovely as usual."
