[edit]From Persian حالا (hâlâ, “now”), ultimately from Arabic حَالًا (ḥālan). Compare Bashkir әле (“still, yet”), Kyrgyz али (ali, “still, as yet; just now”), Turkish hâlâ (“still, yet”), and Uzbek hali (“still, yet”).
