Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Middle English hagworme (viper), from Old Norse hǫggormr (serpent), from hǫgg (stroke, blow) + ormr (worm, snake). Cognate with Icelandic höggormur (poisonous snake, serpent), Swedish huggorm (adder, viper).
