From Low German Haven, Yiddish האַוון (havn), English haven, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *habanō (harbour, haven). Compare German Hafen, Russian га́вань (gávanʹ), Dutch haven, archaic French havre, Spanish abra (small bay, inlet).
