Unadapted borrowing from Ancient Greek (ῐ̔́ππος) ἑταιρῐκή ((híppos) hetairikḗ, “(horse) guards”), from ἑταῖρος (hetaîros, “comrade, companion”) +‎ -ῐκός (-ikós, “-ic”, adjectival suffix).
