Borrowed from Ancient Greek ὑποκοριστικός (hupokoristikós), from ὑποκορίζομαι (hupokorízomai, to speak in the language of children), from ὑπό (hupó, below) + κορίζομαι (korízomai, to act like a girl), from κόρη (kórē, girl).
