Etymology[edit]

From immuno- +‎ suppression.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (file)

Noun[edit]

immunosuppression (usually uncountable, plural immunosuppressions)

  1. (immunology, medicine) The suppression of the immune response, especially its active medical suppression by human agency (via immunosuppressant drugs) to treat autoimmune diseases or to prevent allograft rejection after transplant.

Usage notes[edit]

Some writers reserve the word immunosuppression for the active and intentional hyponymous subset of immunodeficiency, but this usage prescription is not widely followed, as the attested strength of the collocation immunosuppression by HIV illustrates.
